This adorable little family was so fun to shoot! This is Kathryn, her husband Daniel, and their son, also named Daniel. This was their first session with me and it was an absolute pleasure getting to meet them and take their pictures!
Prior to the session, I scheduled a wardrobe consultation with the family where I got to meet Kathryn and her little boy. Little Daniel and I became fast friends during that meeting, which helped ensure that our photo shoot went more smoothly as he was already familiar with me! It was also great to have that wardrobe consultation because we were able to find several outfits for little Daniel to borrow, leaving one less thing for Kathryn to think about as she planned their session with coordinating outfits.
We got to use the antique high chair that I absolutely love for this session! I keep it in the studio on hand so we’re able to use it for any session. We started the shoot with some family shots, and did a cake smash in the high chair at the end — don’t worry, that chair is pretty easy to clean!
I loved how the outfits Daniel borrowed from my studio wardrobe turned out. He looked especially handsome in the blue one you see below! His parents also brought Daniel’s baptism gown to take a few pictures in. This baptism gown is so special — it’s been in the family for over 60 years! I loved getting to capture such a lovely and delicate family heirloom.
Some parents are concerned about how messy a cake smash is for their session. Honestly, I’ve never had that problem with one-year-olds! Milestone one-year sessions are perfect candidates for cake smash sessions because most littles are a little unsure of what to do with the cake. We get some nice photos of them barely touching it, or starting to scrape off a little frosting and then lick their fingers, but most don’t really start smashing or making a mess until after a while. So we’ll get some cute pictures of them with the cake “starting” to smash, and the pictures turn out lovely.
It was such a joy to capture this beautiful family and I can’t wait to meet up with them again in the future!
